Hey sister,

We're jumping right into the story today.

..but first a warning: you must be willing to forget everything every doctor has ever taught you and keep an open mind.

How I Met My Balinese Healer

🚨 So there I was—four years ago, living in Bali—when the pain started.

Like clockwork, between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m., my foot would begin to throb and ache. After a few weeks, I couldn’t walk on it during the night. The pain got worse, and eventually spread to my right hip.

Every step I took made me want to cry. I couldn't even get up to pee. I crawled. And then, in the morning - pain gone. Wtf.

I tried everything!

  • Acupuncture (needles between my toes, the big ones).

  • A physical therapy assistant friend worked on me for a week.

  • I even changed my diet and ate tons of anti-inflammatory foods!

Still—nothing. Same pain. Same confusion.

Then one day,

I was in the car with my Balinese driver / brother, Wayan, when he looked at me and said,

“I have a healer in my village. Do you want to visit her?”

At that point, I would’ve tried anything. So I said, Screw it. Let's go!

We drove into his village and my life changed forever.

We arrive to her healing hut,

where there was already a line of locals waiting quietly.

I sat. I waited. I watched the locals go in one by one. And then, it was my turn.

I sat on the floor, legs stretched out. She poked and prodded my toes and the soles of my feet.

“Does that hurt?”

“No.”

“Does that hurt?”

“No.”

“Does that hurt?”

“YES. That one hurts!!!”

She nodded. “I know what to do. Lay down.”

What I didn’t know then was that she could feel what was going on inside my body through my feet. Your liver, your intestines—everything is connected.

Here's where things got really painful.

She took both hands and pressed into my stomach. I immediately screamed.

As she ignored my screams, she began rearranging my insides—digging in, shifting things I didn’t even know I had.

Then she said,

“Stand up. Walk.”

I stood up. Took a step. Still pain. I looked at her like she was crazy.

“Come lay down again,” she said.

More digging. More pain. I writhed like a fish on the mat.

“Stand up.”

By this point I was about to quit when I took a step....

I couldn't believe it! THE PAIN WAS GONE.
No pain. Not in my foot. Not in my hip. Not in my now-relocated organs.

I turned to her, stunned! "It worked!"

A smile of pride spread on her serious face.  She just nodded.

Like, of course it worked.

After what felt like an exorcism,

...she took me into a room with an altar and gave me a blessing—incense, water poured from a coconut, flowers, rice pressed into my temple.

She tied a black and red bracelet on my wrist for protection, and sent me on my way.

Since then? No pain. This woman healed what traditional specialists and acupunturists couldnt.

Now, anytime I have a crisis—physical, emotional, or otherwise—I go back to Jero.

I have sent hundreds of girls to her over the years, many of whom have told me that she was able to heal things for them that doctors couldn't.

🔍 Travel Lesson of the Week

Western medicine doesn’t always have the full picture.

Every country treats the human body differently.

Ayurveda in India. Herbalism in Vietnam. Cupping in the China. Traditional healers in Bali. There is no one way to understand pain or healing.

In my case, I was looking towards all the ways I've been taught to heal: physical therapy, stretching, eating better. But it never crossed my mind to start the inspection with my toes and have my organs rearranged.

Be open to local methods, doctors and healers - within reason, of course.
